ENGLISH 9

English 9 is a yearlong survey of English designed to develop students' ability to read, write, speak, and listen.  Representing various cultures, eras, and ideas, the literature includes short stories, poetry, drama, novels, and essays.  The writing instruction develops the students' ability to communicate in a variety of forms for a variety of  purposes, including but not limited to paragraph writing, theme organization, grammar, and the mechanics of writing.  Students are also instructed in speaking and listening effectively in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes.

HONORS ENGLISH 9

This is a challenging course coordinating literature, grammar, and writing.  Writing assignments include various types of themes, a term paper, literary analyses, and creative writing.  The literature focuses on short stories, novels, plays, and poetry.  Individual and group projects are also assigned, and students are instructed in speaking and listening effectively in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes.

This honors level course differs from English 9 in content, depth, complexity, and sophistication of materials and expectations.  Students interested in a challenging English curriculum are encouraged to enroll.  However, students are advised not to underestimate the level of difficulty of this course or the accelerated pace expected of honors students.  The Macomb High School honors English courses are truly designed for those students seeking academic challenge at the highest level of high school language arts studies.

ENGLISH 10

This two-semester survey of English covers 1) a genre and/or thematic approach to literature, including short fiction, poetry, at least one novel, and one major dramatic work; 2) a study of grammar, usage, and mechanics through a comprehensive grammar program; 3) composition including personal, narrative, expository, and persuasive essays; and 4) a series of mini-lessons in various aspects of composition, such as writing introductions and conclusions, transitional devices, refining voice and tone, etc.  Students are also instructed in speaking and listening effectively in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes.

HONORS ENGLISH 10

This challenging two-semester survey of English is a continuation of Honors English 9 with literature study and further work to improve writing skills.  Literature will include short fiction, nonfiction, poetry, novels, and full-length dramatic works.  The course includes a study of grammar, usage, and mechanics through a comprehensive, spiraling grammar program.  The writing includes personal, narrative, expository, and persuasive essays, in addition to mini-lessons in various aspects of composition, such as writing introductions and conclusions, transitional devices, refining voice and tone, etc.  Students are also instructed in speaking and listening effectively in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes.

Prerequisite: English 10; Specific referral from Macomb High English or Guidance Department.  Students without such referral will not be enrolled.
This course is intended to fulfill the third-year English requirement for students who are not college-bound and who would benefit from additional assistance with reading and basic skills.  The literature focuses on American and contemporary stories, novels, and nonfiction articles.  The writing may be based on reading assignments, personal experience, or other practical writing situations.  Students are also instructed in speaking and listening effectively in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes.  Reading and writing instruction follows closely the skills required for success on the state administered exams at the eleventh grade.

HONORS WORLD LITERATURE

This junior level honors course explores regional, historical, and thematic approaches to literature from around the world.  Study focuses on the ways in which diverse cultures are revealed and shaped by literature.  Texts are analyzed and ideas discussed in a seminar setting; writing opportunities include analytic, creative, personal response, and research.  Students are also instructed in speaking and listening effectively in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes.

WRITING WORKSHOP

Prerequisite:  English 10
This course allows students to use their own skills to make discoveries and to explore alternative paths in writing.  Students are encouraged to seek truth in writing, to invent and play with words, and to stretch their vocabulary and imagination.  It is a serious but different kind of writing course for students who like both to experiment and to practice honesty in writing.

JOURNALISM

This course stresses the basics of journalistic writing.  Students will study reporting and writing, editing, copy reading, layout design, journalism ethics and history.

EARLY AMERICAN LITERATURE                      
Colonial to mid-Nineteenth Century

This course is a survey presenting examples of the best American writing from its colonial beginnings through the mid-nineteenth century to gain an understanding of our American culture.  Historical, religious, and political writings of the 1600 and l700’s and poetry, essays, short stories, and novels from the l800’s are studied.  Individual reading of fiction or nonfiction works of prominent American authors is also required, and writing is based largely on the literature studied.  Students are also instructed in speaking and listening effectively in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes.

MODERN AMERICAN LITERATURE                      
Late Nineteenth-Twentieth Century

EARLY BRITISH LITERATURE                            
Beowulf through Shakespeare

This course is a survey of British literature from the Anglo-Saxon period through the early seventeenth century.  The literature includes epic verse, poetry, and drama representing Britain’s heritage, while novels or nonfiction works are required for individual reading.  Writing is based on the literature studied and includes some creative writing and research.  Students are also instructed in speaking and listening effectively in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes.  This course is recommended for college-bound students.

MODERN BRITISH LITERATURE                        
Donne to Early Twentieth  Century

This course is a survey of seventeenth to early twentieth century British writing including poetry, essays, drama, and novels.  Individual reading of fiction or nonfiction works of prominent British authors is also required, and writing is based on the literature studied.  Students are also instructed in speaking and listening effectively in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes.  This course is recommended for college-bound students.

SPEECH/COMMUNICATIONS

This one-semester elective will be offered to any student in the eleventh or twelfth grade and satisfies one semester of students' four-year English requirement.  It does not satisfy any writing or literature requirements.  The course will cover: 1) the communication process and the role of communication both for the individual and as a function of social cohesion; 2) interactive listening; 3) anxiety management; 4) research opportunities in expository and persuasive speaking and debate; 5) interviewing; 6) radio/TV and media analysis; 7) possibly oral interpretation of literature.

ENGLISH 12

This course is intended to fulfill the fourth year English requirement for students who probably are not college-bound.  The first semester will focus on the practical communication skills needed by students for their work and personal lives.  These include correct grammar and usage, punctuation, spelling, listening skills, and job interview skills. Some contemporary literature also will be included.

The second semester will focus on the communication skills necessary to get and keep a job.  These include writing inquiries and requests, business letters, applications, and resumes, using correct grammar and usage, punctuation, and spelling. Students also will do a research project, plan talks and give introductions and speeches about jobs/careers/professions.  Some contemporary literature will be included.

COMPOSITION

Prerequisite:  Three years of English
This is a one-semester academic writing course designed to prepare students for college freshmen composition.  Through a core of longer essays and various shorter assignments, students will develop their skills in grammar, mechanics, usage, organization, and style.  The core essay types include professional letter writing; personal narrative (college application essay); reflective narrative; analysis; description; compare and contrast; argumentation; and a research term paper.

ADVANCED JOURNALISM                                     

1 credit (1 year)

Prerequisite:  Journalism, typing proficiency, and computer proficiency
The emphasis of this course is on journalistic writing techniques stressing content, accuracy, style, punctuation, desktop publishing, mechanics, research, editing, and proofreading.  Students enrolled in this course are staff members of the school newspaper, the Sentinel.  As a requirement of this course, the Sentinel is published monthly.

HONORS AP ENGLISH                                           

1 credit (1 year)

Prerequisite:  Three years of English
This very rigorous course includes intensive reading of challenging nonfiction and fiction works, analysis of the style, structure, and ideas of these works, and considerable writing.  A process approach to composition will be used with students producing papers in the following modes:  narration, analysis, definition, cause/effect, comparison/contrast, argument, and research.  Students will also practice impromptu, in-class essays to prepare for various college proficiency tests.  Students taking this course may take an Advanced Placement English Language and Composition test in May for college credit.

Students interested in a challenging English curriculum are encouraged to enroll.  However, students are advised not to underestimate the level of difficulty of this course or the accelerated pace expected of AP students.  The Macomb High School honors English courses are truly designed for those students seeking academic challenge at the highest level of high school language arts studies.
 

ENG 101 COMPOSITION I         (Dual Credit)

Prerequisite:  English 10, Entrance Testing Criteria
This is a one-semester college freshmen composition course.  Students enrolled will simultaneously enroll in Spoon River College, including tuition, and receive three hours of academic credit for ENG 101 from Spoon River in addition to their 1/2 credit from Macomb High School.

Students should be aware that scoring standards of this course reflect an expectation of college level work.  This semester of Composition I explores the writing process through a core of formal essays including: description, illustration, compare and contrast, cause and effect, and argumentation.  The textbook contains previously published professional models of each type of essay, which students study thoroughly as they prepare their own work.  Through all these assignments, students will develop their skills in grammar, mechanics, usage, organization, style, research methods and MLA documentation.

This course is intended to be coupled with Dual Credit Composition II.

 

ENG 102 COMPOSITION II         (Dual Credit)   

1/2 credit      (3 semester hours for SRC)

Writing Option
Prerequisite:  English 101 Composition I (Dual Credit)
This is a one-semester college freshmen composition course.  Students enrolled will simultaneously enroll in Spoon River College, including tuition, and receive three hours of academic credit for ENG 102 from Spoon River in addition to their 1/2 credit from Macomb High School.

Students should be aware that scoring standards of this course reflect an expectation of college level work.  Dual Credit Composition II explores the writing process through a core of formal essays including: process analysis; literary analysis; comparative analysis of film and literature; opinion and persuasion; and a formal research term paper.  As in Dual Credit Composition I, students will study published models of each of these essay types in depth.  As in Dual Credit Composition I, students will continue to develop their skills in grammar, mechanics, usage, organization, and style.  During this semester they will thoroughly study the methods of research and MLA documentation in depth.
