eras, and ideas, the literature includes short stories, poetry, drama, novels,

not limited to paragraph writing, theme organization, grammar, and the mechanics
of writing. Students are also instructed in speaking and listening
effectively in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes.

This is a challenging course coordinating literature, grammar, and writing.
Writing assignments include various types of themes, a term paper, literary
analyses, and creative writing. The literature focuses on short stories,
novels, plays, and poetry. Individual and group projects are also
assigned, and students are instructed in speaking and listening effectively in a
variety of situations for a variety of purposes.
This honors level course differs from English 9 in
content, depth, complexity, and sophistication of materials and expectations.
Students interested in a challenging English curriculum are encouraged to
enroll. However, students are advised not to underestimate the level of
difficulty of this course or the accelerated pace expected of honors students.

expository, and persuasive essays; and 4) a series of mini-lessons in various
aspects of composition, such as writing introductions and conclusions,

etc. Students are also instructed in speaking and listening effectively in
a variety of situations for a variety of purposes.

This course is intended to fulfill the third-year
English requirement for students who are not college-bound and who would benefit
from additional assistance with reading and basic skills. The literature
focuses on American and contemporary stories, novels, and nonfiction
articles. The writing may be based on reading assignments, personal
experience, or other practical writing situations. Students are also
instructed in speaking and listening effectively in a variety of situations for
a variety of purposes. Reading and writing instruction follows closely the
skills required for success on the state administered exams at the eleventh
grade.

to explore alternative paths in writing. Students are encouraged to seek

students who like both to experiment and to practice honesty in writing.

from its colonial beginnings through the mid-nineteenth century to gain an
understanding of our American culture. Historical, religious, and

nonfiction works of prominent American authors is also required, and writing is
based largely on the literature studied. Students are also instructed in

interactive listening; 3) anxiety management; 4) research opportunities in
expository and persuasive speaking and debate; 5) interviewing; 6) radio/TV and

This course is intended to fulfill the fourth year English requirement for
students who probably are not college-bound. The first semester will focus
on the practical communication skills needed by students for their work and
personal lives. These include correct grammar and usage, punctuation,
spelling, listening skills, and job interview skills. Some contemporary
literature also will be included.The second
semester will focus on the communication skills necessary to get and keep a job.
These include writing inquiries and requests, business letters, applications,
and resumes, using correct grammar and usage, punctuation, and spelling.
Students also will do a research project, plan talks and give introductions and
speeches about jobs/careers/professions. Some contemporary literature will
be included.

This is a
one-semester academic writing course designed to prepare students for college
freshmen composition. Through a core of longer essays and various shorter

writing; personal narrative (college application essay); reflective narrative;
analysis; description; compare and contrast; argumentation; and a research term
paper.

JOURNALISM

The emphasis of this course is on journalistic writing techniques stressing
content, accuracy, style, punctuation, desktop publishing, mechanics, research,
editing, and proofreading. Students enrolled in this course are staff members of
the school newspaper, the Sentinel. As a requirement of this
course, the Sentinel is published monthly.

This very rigorous course includes intensive reading of challenging
nonfiction and fiction works, analysis of the style, structure, and ideas of
these works, and considerable writing. A process approach to composition
will be used with students producing papers in the following modes:
narration, analysis, definition, cause/effect, comparison/contrast, argument,
and research. Students will also practice impromptu, in-class essays to
prepare for various college proficiency tests. Students taking this course
may take an Advanced Placement English Language and Composition test in May for
college credit.Students interested in a

This is a one-semester college freshmen composition course. Students
enrolled will simultaneously enroll in Spoon River College, including tuition,
and receive three hours of academic credit for ENG 101 from Spoon River in
addition to their 1/2 credit from Macomb High School.
Students should be aware that scoring standards of this
course reflect an expectation of college level work. This semester of
Composition I explores the writing process through a core of formal essays
including: description, illustration, compare and contrast, cause and effect,
and argumentation. The textbook contains previously published professional
models of each type of essay, which students study thoroughly as they prepare
their own work. Through all these assignments, students will develop their
skills in grammar, mechanics, usage, organization, style, research methods and
MLA documentation.
This course is intended to be coupled with Dual Credit
Composition II.

style. During this semester they will thoroughly study the methods of
research and MLA documentation in depth.
